The name of the game

I got in the past some E-Mails from people looking for their "vogler roots", asking me if we were relatives or if I can at least help them on their search.
Well, my own family is not so wide spread (have a look at "My personal history"), the only thing I can do is being some kind of "Meeting Point", and that´s why I created this page. I want this page to be a "pinboard", publishing your messages (at: "Wanted: Vogler") so you can get in touch with other people on their hunt. - And by the way give you some informations about the name.

-------------------------------

Origin of the Name

The name Vogler is created out of the old tradition to call people by the job they do. A Vogler was a bird hunter (Vogel [german] means bird) using traps and nets. He catched the birds to sell or train them (like a falconer). I was a respected job and some noble men did it as a hobby. One example is the later german King Heinrich I. who got the epithet "Heinrich the Vogler".

My personal history

My own roots are in Lauenburg a small town in Pommern/Prussia (today Leborg/Poland). Noone from my family emigrated or even spent a longer term outside of germany (only as sailors on sea or as soldiers during the wars). Some members of the family left Pommern and moved to Berlin.
My grandpa -- Alfred Vogler -- was sailor in the empirial and third reich navy and traveled around the world, but always came home again. One of his brothers worked several years as baker man ("baker man is baking bread" ;-) ) on an ocean liner on its way between europe and america.

My family tree (only as much as I know and only the Voglerian part):
